Why I Started Blogging (And Why I Still Do)

Why I Started Blogging (And Why I Still Do)

why i started blogging and why i still blog

I started my blog—the one that became Running on Balance—back in 2009. In the blogging world, this makes me a dinosaur.

In my mind, it makes me a trailblazer.

You see when I started blogging I had no intentions of being what we now call an influencer. That is, I didn’t start my blog with the intention of writing sponsored posts or being an affiliate marketer.

(In all honesty, I didn’t even know you could use a blog to really make money until years later.)

I started blogging simply because I wanted to share what I know and what I love to do.

What do I know?

I know women’s fitness and health. I am a lifelong fitness junkie and someone who knows how good it feels to feel good.

What do I love to do?

I love to share health tips and that feeling great feeling with every woman.

I’m really no different than most of you, dear readers. I have a husband, three kids, a job, and my own interests. I have way more things on my to-do list than will ever get done.

But I know that I am at my best when I eat good food, move my body, get plenty of sleep, and take time for myself. So I’ve figured out a way to make sure those things happen even when life goes crazy.

The reality is: life is always crazy. I can’t wait for things to calm down or for there to be less stuff to do or for the kids to grow up. Life is happening NOW, and I want to make the most of it.

As I’ve learned painfully from the death of two close friends, tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.

So I write to bring you the science of women’s health issues in simple language because knowledge is power.

I write to share tips and tricks from my own life that help me fit in fitness and make healthy choices.

Other active women share their stories of fitness quests or how meaningful movement can be fun!

I also write to inspire you to reach for your dreams (even when they don’t quite go to plan).

Really, creating this blog and how it supports the health coaching work I love is an act of self-care. It feeds me and fuels me to support the growing community of Well Balanced Women.

As my audience has grown (thank you for sharing!!), I’ve pushed myself to step out onto bigger stages. In September I’ll be presenting at the Type A Blog Conference in Chicago. I will be speaking about how I used my blog to grow my local personal training business into a worldwide health coaching platform.

If you’re a blogger or a small business owner, I invite you to register now and join me at Type A this September. When you register, use coupon code SPEAKERFRIEND for $20 off your registration. If you’re just getting started blogging, you’ll be amazed by the quality of resources at this conference. Don’t miss out!

As always, thanks for being here and helping me do what I love.

Running to Wellness: A Passion to Prosperity Podcast

Running to Wellness: A Passion to Prosperity Podcast

passion prosperity running wellness

I’m sure you’ve all heard the comparison of birthing a baby and birthing a business. Well, for me, those two life events are even more closely aligned.

It was my first pregnancy (in 2002) that set me down the path of reflection and research that would alter my life. That time period planted the seeds for what would become my business Balance Personal Fitness Training, my blog Running on Balance, and the online community I hostess as Well Balanced Women.

Never when I started my research into running and pregnancy did I think that it would be the gestation period for a decade-long career. I was just someone who knew what she was interested in– running– and experiencing the new world of pregnancy.

I also knew that I liked (like– still true in the present tense) to be informed.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

For the details of this twisted, bumpy ride into entrepreneurship that still is fueled by my passion, check out my interview with Paul T. Shafer. Paul is a the host of Passion to Prosperity, a podcast that features people who have used their passion to fuel prosperity in their life.

(Spoiler alert: Prosperity does not mean I make so much money I don’t know what to do with it.)

In my episode of Passion to Prosperity, Paul and I chat about how I still feel lucky– prosperous!– to live a life with my passion for helping people feel great in their bodies as part of my everyday.

This life of mine is all about running to wellness.

Do you live a passion-fueled, prosperous life? Tell me about it in the comments.

Flip the Menopause Mindset: Survive & Thrive!

Flip the Menopause Mindset: Survive & Thrive!

Squeeeee!  I’m so excited to announce that I’ve been knee-deep in menopause!

Well, not exactly.  I’ve been knee-deep in reading, researching, discussing, and learning all about menopause.

Still confused as to why I would use exclamation points when talking about menopause?

Because I think it’s high time we

Rather than struggle through an inevitable phase of life, I want to empower women to survive and even THRIVE in the perimenopausal years.  My certification as a Third Age Woman Health Coach gives me a unique perspective to help women learn the physiology of the menopausal body as well as how to integrate lifestyle choices that will support overall wellness.

As a “Third-Age Woman,” you might be wondering how you can:

  • burn fat efficiently
  • exercise for functional fitness
  • balance hormones
  • eat healthfully and with satisfaction
  • maintain bone density
  • improve sleep
  • ask your physician the right questions
  • create a lifestyle that supports your wellness

Or, if you’re just plain tired of feeling like you no longer know the body you live in…I’m talking to you.

But rather than just sit around and complain about hot flashes, gaining weight, and never being able to remember anything, I want to help guide you to flip the menopause mindset.  Once you understand what’s going on with your body and strategies for making positive changes, you’ll be on your way to surviving and thriving during the decade of change.

If you’re in Austin, you’re in luck!  I have a six-week Survive & Thrive workshop series launching March 20th. CLICK HERE TO CHECK IT OUT!

If you’re not in Austin, keep your eyes and ears open– and watch my Well Balanced Women Facebook group— for the announcement of the ONLINE version of Survive & Thrive. (Coming Fall 2017!)

I’m so glad to be bringing bucketsful of important information to women who want to know more about their body and how it works.  I love working with women who prize their overall wellness and know that physical, mental, and emotional health is a worthy goal.

Good health and great happiness to you.

Love Letter to Myself

A Love Letter to Myself

Hey there, Self,

I know how guilty you feel for abandoning your blog for the last six weeks.  I know that you have a lot of great post ideas, but they just haven’t seemed to make it from idea to reality.  And that’s frustrating.

Take a sec and count to ten.  Breathe deeply.

(This is the same advice you give lots of women every day!  You should heed your own advice!)

Let’s remember what you’ve been doing for the last six weeks:

Building an online school

Yep, you’ve been riding a creative wave in that ocean for so long that you’ve had to let a few other things (ummm, blogging!) go.  But from the realm of post-it note organization is springing forth THREE online courses and coaching opportunities.  Your dreams of working with women all over the world are coming true.

Along with this creative explosion has come a tremendous amount of learning.  And this learning isn’t really the type you’re great at.  (Sorry, Self, but it’s true.)  You’ve really had to push yourself out of your humanist, communication-centered world and into TechLand.  It’s been hard.  It’s been, ummmmm, shall we say LUMPY at times.  But you’ve pushed through.  And now look at how much you know that you didn’t know just a few months ago.

Combine the creativity and the learning loads of new skills, and you’ve been buzzing high.  These few months have reinvigorated your commitment to women’s wellness. Hard work can be really energizing!  I am so proud of you for seeing it through.

It’s such a thrill to know that all of your fitness and wellness goodness is about to be available to women of all ages and all abilities.  Helping women find ways to create a balanced life has always been your goal. The Well Balanced Women school is **ready**!

So, yes, you’ve left the blog alone for a while.  But I think your readers will understand.  (I know you feel guilty…you always feel guilty, even though you’re working hard to let that habit go.)  When you show them the awesome courses you’ve developed, they’ll certainly understand.

But, just to be clear, the blog is coming back.  You’re committed to it.

Be well,

Your very own Self

P.S. You are enough.

A FREE Progressive Workout for the 12 Days of Christmas

A FREE Progressive Workout for the 12 Days of Christmas

We’re less than a week til Christmas, so I’d be willing to guess you’re busy.

You’d really like to stick to your fitness routine, as it’s a critical element of your overall self-care.

But there’s just not enough time in the day!

I’m here with a plan.

I’ve written a 12 day workout that will appear right in your email in box each day from December 25th until January 5th.  Think of it as my Christmas GIFT to you!

We’ll start next Sunday—yes, on Christmas—with our first exercise.  It’ll take you between one minute and 90 seconds to complete the whole “workout” on Sunday.  After all, it’s just the first day of Christmas.

On the 26th, we’ll do another exercise followed by the exercise from Christmas.

So, just like the song, we’ll be accumulating a set of exercises.  By January 5th—the 12th Day of Christmas—you’ll have a full workout.  In all, it will take you around 30 minutes to complete that final workout.

What that means is that this little gift is the PERFECT way for you to ease yourself into an exercise habit!

Certainly you can begin by devoting a minute and a half to yourself.  Each day will take just a little bit longer than the day before, but you’ll be building up in a manageable way.  And 12 days is just long enough for you to really get the fitness habit rolling without being overwhelmed.  A progressive workout is a great strategy for getting your new year off to a healthy start.

What equipment will I need?

Just your body.  No tubes or weights or stability balls or fancy equipment required!

My house is going to be a wreck because I have a bunch of people coming to stay for Christmas?

No problem.  You need only about 5 square feet of cleared floor space for the exercises.

I’m a beginner.  I mean, like a for real, out of shape, get winded going up the stairs beginner.

Great!  Every exercise can be modified to suit your ability level.

But I don’t really know how to do the exercises?

That’s okay!  Every day comes as an email with both the exercise description as well as a link to a video of me doing the exercise—and offering modifications to make exercises both easier and harder.

What if I need a little more help?  Is there a way I can ask for help?

Make sure you’re part of the Well Balanced Women group on Facebook!  I post there regularly, and I’ll be in the group daily to answer questions and cheer you along.

This sounds cool, but I’m totally strapped for cash.

No worries.  IT’S FREE.  This 12 Days of Christmas workout program is my GIFT to you.

Can I share this with a friend or a family member?

Of course!  Please!  And thank you!

Keep an eye on your inbox on Christmas Day for the first part of the progressive workout!

Registration for 2016-17 is closed.

How to Find Time to Achieve your Goals? Make It!

How to Find Time to Achieve your Goals? Make It!

best planner to help achieve goals

Everyone is busy.  So how to find time to accomplish all of the goals I set?

It all starts with planning.

Whether it is laying out a year-long training plan to run a 90KM race or knowing what is for dinner tomorrow night, there is a plan.

For some people, the very idea of planning heaps bundles of dread upon them.  Others relish the opportunity of the future and its unknown bounty.  Either way, planning is a habit that highly productive people value.

If you’re sitting here with a vision of charts, the black and white lines of a spreadsheet, or even a spiral-bound book of boxes, let me stop you right now.

That’s not the kind of planning I’m talking about.

I’m talking about colorful, juicy, vibrant planning.  Close your eyes and imagine the most satisfying future for yourself– that’s what we’re planning for!

To work toward that sense of abundant joy, I love the Create Your Shining Year Biz & Life workbooks by Leonie Dawson.  I used the 2016 workbook to help me strategically implement changes in my business in 2016.  I wanted to make sure my work aligned more closely with my personal goals and passions.  The Create Your Shining Biz workbook was like a trusted girlfriend guiding me along the way.

Used by entrepreneurs, artists, mamas, creatives, coaches, teachers and women of all ages, the Create Your Shining Year workbooks + daily planner are filled with powerful worksheets to help you create your amazing new year.  The style of the workbooks exudes an optimism and joy while the content is solid coaching.

In the past, I have used different planners to kick off my yearly planning.  But then the excitement of opportunity fades, and I don’t pick up the planner anymore.  But with the Create Your Shining Biz workbook, I kept using it all year.  The inviting design and gentle, loving (but practical and actionable) guides are the right style of coaching for me.

And you know what?  My business has grown and changed in so many ways, and there are more exciting changes coming to kick off 2017.

I opted to use the Create Your Shining Life planner in a personal way as my gratitude journal.  It has spent the year at my bedside, where I could quickly jot down the wins of the day before bed each night.  I think that focusing on gratitude has been a key part of my abundance this year.

But the best part about learning how gratitude and abundance really work?  SHARING THEM!

If you’re ready to finally figure out how to fit in fitness, live your real life, AND achieve all those awesome dreams you’ve got swimming around in your head, I’m here to help!

Because I had such a great experience using the Create Your Shining Year workbook, I am GIVING AWAY a planning bundle to one lucky Running On Balance reader.  Let me help you figure out how to find time to be the best YOU you can be!
