I’m sure you’ve all heard the comparison of birthing a baby and birthing a business. Well, for me, those two life events are even more closely aligned.

It was my first pregnancy (in 2002) that set me down the path of reflection and research that would alter my life. That time period planted the seeds for what would become my business Balance Personal Fitness Training, my blog Running on Balance, and the online community I hostess as Well Balanced Women.

Never when I started my research into running and pregnancy did I think that it would be the gestation period for a decade-long career. I was just someone who knew what she was interested in– running– and experiencing the new world of pregnancy.

I also knew that I liked (like– still true in the present tense) to be informed.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Squeeeee!  I’m so excited to announce that I’ve been knee-deep in menopause!

Well, not exactly.  I’ve been knee-deep in reading, researching, discussing, and learning all about menopause.

Still confused as to why I would use exclamation points when talking about menopause?

Because I think it’s high time we

FLIP THE MENOPAUSE MINDSET!

Rather than struggle through an inevitable phase of life, I want to empower women to survive and even THRIVE in the perimenopausal years.  My certification as a Third Age Woman Health Coach gives me a unique perspective to help women learn the physiology of the menopausal body as well as how to integrate lifestyle choices that will support overall wellness.

As a “Third-Age Woman,” you might be wondering how you can:

  • burn fat efficiently
  • exercise for functional fitness
  • balance hormones
  • eat healthfully and with satisfaction

Hey there, Self,

I know how guilty you feel for abandoning your blog for the last six weeks.  I know that you have a lot of great post ideas, but they just haven’t seemed to make it from idea to reality.  And that’s frustrating.

Take a sec and count to ten.  Breathe deeply.

(This is the same advice you give lots of women every day!  You should heed your own advice!)

Let’s remember what you’ve been doing for the last six weeks:

Building an online school

Yep, you’ve been riding a creative wave in that ocean for so long that you’ve had to let a few other things (ummm, blogging!) go.  But from the realm of post-it note organization is springing forth THREE online courses and coaching opportunities.  Your dreams of working with women all over the world are coming true.

Along with this creative explosion has come a tremendous amount of learning.  And this learning isn’t really the type you’re great at.  (Sorry, Self, but it’s true.)  You’ve really had to push yourself out of your humanist, communication-centered world and into TechLand.  It’s been hard.  It’s been, ummmmm, shall we say LUMPY at times.  But you’ve pushed through.  And now look at how much you know that you didn’t know just a few months ago.

Combine the creativity and the learning loads of new skills, and you’ve been buzzing high.  These few months have reinvigorated your commitment to women’s wellness. Hard work can be really energizing!  I am so proud of you for seeing it through.

It’s such a thrill to know that all of your fitness and wellness goodness is about to be available to women of all ages and all abilities.  Helping women find ways to create a balanced life has always been your goal.

So, yes, you’ve left the blog alone for a while.  But I think your readers will understand.  (I know you feel guilty…you always feel guilty, even though you’re working hard to let that habit go.)  When you show them the awesome courses you’ve developed, they’ll certainly understand.

But, just to be clear, the blog is coming back.  You’re committed to it.

A FREE Progressive Workout for the 12 Days of Christmas

We’re less than a week til Christmas, so I’d be willing to guess you’re busy.

You’d really like to stick to your fitness routine, as it’s a critical element of your overall self-care.

But there’s just not enough time in the day!

I’m here with a plan.

THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS PROGRESSIVE WORKOUT

I’ve written a 12 day workout that will appear right in your email in box each day from December 25th until January 5th.  Think of it as my Christmas GIFT to you!

We’ll start next Sunday—yes, on Christmas—with our first exercise.  It’ll take you between one minute and 90 seconds to complete the whole “workout” on Sunday.  After all, it’s just the first day of Christmas.

On the 26th, we’ll do another exercise followed by the exercise from Christmas.

So, just like the song, we’ll be accumulating a set of exercises.  By January 5th—the 12th Day of Christmas—you’ll have a full workout.  In all, it will take you around 30 minutes to complete that final workout.

What that means is that this little gift is the PERFECT way for you to ease yourself into an exercise habit!

Certainly you can begin by devoting a minute and a half to yourself.  Each day will take just a little bit longer than the day before, but you’ll be building up in a manageable way.  And 12 days is just long enough for you to really get the fitness habit rolling without being overwhelmed.  A progressive workout is a great strategy for getting your new year off to a healthy start.

What equipment will I need?

Just your body.  No tubes or weights or stability balls or fancy equipment required!

My house is going to be a wreck because I have a bunch of people coming to stay for Christmas?

No problem.  You need only about 5 square feet of cleared floor space for the exercises.

I’m a beginner.  I mean, like a for real, out of shape, get winded going up the stairs beginner.

Great!  Every exercise can be modified to suit your ability level.

But I don’t really know how to do the exercises?

That’s okay!  Every day comes as an email with both the exercise description as well as a link to a video of me doing the exercise—and offering modifications to make exercises both easier and harder.

Everyone is busy.  So how to find time to accomplish all of the goals I set?

It all starts with planning.

Whether it is laying out a year-long training plan to run a 90KM race or knowing what is for dinner tomorrow night, there is a plan.

For some people, the very idea of planning heaps bundles of dread upon them.  Others relish the opportunity of the future and its unknown bounty.  Either way, planning is a habit that highly productive people value.

If you’re sitting here with a vision of charts, the black and white lines of a spreadsheet, or even a spiral-bound book of boxes, let me stop you right now.

That’s not the kind of planning I’m talking about.

Great Ways to Workout at Home

The humble resistance tube: it’s one of the best ways to workout at home.

When you combine the resistance tube with simple exercises performed in a circuit, you create an effective, efficient workout.  Today I have FIVE upper body exercises to challenge you.

Perform each of the five exercises for one minute each.  Complete TWO circuits.

If you have more time, take a one minute break at the each circuit, and complete THREE circuits.  All of this good, hard work takes less than 20 minutes!

Here we go:

Bicep curls

Triceps press (one minute RIGHT then one minute LEFT)

Front raises

Lateral raises

Bent row

Remember that when you work with a resistance tube, you are in charge of how easy or hard it is.  Adjust as necessary!  Adjustments can be made most easily in this workout by where your foot is placed on the tube and how much slack is held in the band.  Also remember that it really is nothing more than a giant rubber band, and beware of the potential to snap yourself.  You will do this only once!  Ouch!

Need a resistance tube?  This is the one I recommend and use with my Balance Personal Fitness Training clients. (Disclosure: The Amazon link is an affiliate link.)  I find the red (medium resistance) and green (light resistance) to be the most universally useful.

As always, do not perform this or any other workout without prior clearance from your physician.  The videos describe modifications, but if you have injuries or other health conditions that make these exercises inappropriate for you, please listen to your body and your physician!
